Planning Meeting

I've now spoken to Sabrina, and after a little bit of schedule shuffling, we've arranged a meeting on thursday 29th at 3pm.

Obviously Sabrina works within the industry, so she already knows a lot of what she's expecting to get out of this, but in order to make the meeting run as smoothly as possible, I've tried to plan as much in advance as I can. To help with the styling of the products, and to try and pinpoint the particular visual style she's after:

  • I've researched a number of food photographers, and their websites.
  • I went to the local library to get some cake & confectionary books out. (though Sabrina has quite a collection already.)
  • I've downloaded a selection of images from the internet to create a slideshow.
  • I've also asked Sabrina to organise some relevant images herself.

Previous Clients: Lady Jayne's Cakes

At this point, we're supposed to upload any photographs we've taken for previous clients. Unfortunately, I have very little experience of this sort (having only studied the city and guilds levels 1 and 2.) The only pictures I do have of this kind, are the ones I've taken for a friend of mine who owns her own cupcake business. Having met her through my sister though, this isn't your usual photographer/client relationship. She texts me when she has something to photograph, I pop round and take a few snaps, then I usually get paid with a selection of cakes!

Sabrina setup Lady Jayne's cakes a few years ago, and provides various sorts of cakes for weddings/parties/corporate events. She usually took the photographs herself, but when she found out I was studying photography, asked me if I wanted to give it a try.

I don't think they turned out too badly, but I was somewhat hampered by a lack of the proper equipment. I only had a piece of card for the backdrop, and the available natural light. Whilst that isn't really an excuse for the quality of the pictures (my lack of experience being the primary issue), I do think I could achieve better results with the resources available at the college.

So, what's this all about then?

Right, we're in the middle of our first wednesday evening class with Steve, and we've just learned what our first module will be about.

We'll have to approach a client, then somehow convince them to let us plan, organise, and carry out a photo shoot of their business. This shoot can either take place in the college studio, or can be a location based shoot. We will however have to ensure we meet certain learning outcomes when we've completed the module:

Professional and contextual studies learning outcomes

Creativity and social context learning outcomes

As part of the module we'll also have to provide relevant research, which will back up, and influence our approach to the whole process. All of which will be posted on this blog.
